Rare birds and animals rescued from Indian home

Wildlife officials in India have rescued 80 rare and endangered birds and animals from a private home.

Local media reports suggest that the officials swooped on the house of Mr Sudheendra Aithal, which was located in the town of Saligrama in the Udupi district.

In total, forestry officers rescued 53 birds and 27 animals from the property. These included a lion-tailed macaque, a mouse deer, and a python.

However, Mr Aithal said that all the animals were injured when he found them and that he had only sought to treat them. He explained that he always returned animals to the wild after treatment.

According to local newspapers, he added: "Some animals and birds, which were not fit enough or could not adjust to forest life, are still being taken care of."

Officials revealed that only endangered species were removed from the property.
