Poacher killed by Indian rhino

A poacher who is thought to have killed a number of rhinos in an Indian national park has been gored to death by a female rhinoceros.

The Indo-Asian News Service (IANS) reports that Gaonbura Ronfar was killed by an angry rhino in the Kaziranga National Park as he tried to illegally poach more of the creatures.

Although it is thought that Mr Ronfar was killed in late September, it took officials some time to identify the body.

Another man who accompanied Mr Ronfar on his poaching reported that he was killed by a female who was trying to protect her young calf.

While the dead man's family knew of the event, they tried to keep it a secret as they feared local residents would be angry.

Indian rhinos are listed as being endangered by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources. Their numbers have dwindled as a result of poachers, who kill the creatures for their horns.

Fewer than 2,500 individuals are thought to survive in the wild.
