Karmele Llano Sanchez - Executive Director
Karmele is a Spanish vet who joined International Animal Rescue in 2006 to launch our Indonesian operation. Karmele has volunteered at several rescue centres in Indonesia and also worked at the Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre Nyaru Menteng in Kalimantan. Together with Darma and Izul she has established the first-ever rescue and rehabilitation facility for macaques and lorises in Indonesia. Karmele also manages a second IAR project for forest protection and conservation in Lampung, Sumatra, financed by AECID (Spanish Agency for Cooperation in International Development). Since 2009 Karmele has also taken the lead in setting up IAR's orangutan rescue project in West Kalimantan, Indonesian Borneo, and is using her experience and expertise to rehabilitate these endangered primates and prepare them for release back into the wild. In the little spare time she has, she is following a Masters in Veterinary Sciences at Murdoch University in Australia.
Siti Rochani - Finance Manager
Siti (ibu Annie) joined us in 2011 as finance manager of Yayasan IAR Indonesia. Her tasks are to manage all the finances and cash, to produce financial reports and ensure all protocols and procedures regarding finances are followed. Ibu Annie is assisted by Yenni, the finance assistant.
The IAR team in Ketapang
Argitoe Ranting - Field Manager
Argitoe has worked with International Animal Rescue since 2006. Currently, Argitoe is the field manager of the IAR project in Ketapang but first joined us as head keeper for macaques and subsequently became head keeper for lorises. He had previously spent five years working as a keeper at Nyaru Menteng Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre and gained a great deal of experience handling animals, particularly orangutans. He now oversees the daily animal management and the rescue operations, as well as the construction of the new centre.
Dr Adi Irawan – Administration Manager
Dr Adi joined International Animal Rescue in early 2010 as veterinarian for the new orangutan centre in Ketapang. He is now the administration manager, while still devoting a part of his time to veterinary activities. He is assisted by Anita Herawati and Jenni Jaffe, both veterinarians, as well as Wisnu Hadi Broto who is responsible for the financial reporting in Ketapang, and Yuli the administration assistant.
The team in Ketapang furthermore consists of two caretakers - Toriin and Angi - and five babysitters: Nur, Mariani, Dede, Sri and Anna; as well as two security guards - Madrio and Oga.

Nicolien de Lange - Manager
Nicky began volunteering for International Animal Rescue in Indonesia in January 2009. She has a Masters degree in International Business and had worked for several years in the commercial sector as an account specialist at a recruitment agency and as a reward analyst. During this period Nicky also volunteered for the Jane Goodall Institute in Holland. When she then spent several months as a volunteer for an orphanage in Africa it made her realise that she wanted to do something really worthwhile with her life. She went to work for Stichting AAP in the Netherlands before moving to Indonesia in January 2009. After proving herself invaluable as a volunteer, Nicky was appointed as Centre Manager for IAR's centre in Ciapus. She is also studying Natural and Environmental Sciences via the Open University.
Aris Hidayat – Assistant Manager
Aris joined us in 2006 as head of animal keepers. Since 2011 he has been the assistant manager in Ciapus.
Sharmini Paramasivam – Coordinator of the medical team
Sharmini joined International Animal Rescue as veterinarian in 2010, after spending two months doing masters research at the IAR centre earlier in the year. She heads the medical team in Ciapus consisting of Dr Wendi Prameswari and Paramedis Suli Partono.
Asman Adi Purwanto – Head of animal caretakers
Asman has been a macaque caretaker at IAR since 2006. Since 2001 he has been appointed head of the animal caretakers. As such, he takes care of the daily management of slow loris and macaque caretakers, and furthermore carries out the daily activities of the macaque caretakers. In Ciapus, there are six slow loris caretakers: Bobby, Mursid, Mastur, Firman, Andi and Barnas, as well as three macaque caretakers; Marko, Wawan and Yusup, as well as the field staff coordinated by Absi.
Indri Hapsari and Indah Winarti – Education and Awareness
Indri, who has a degree in Biology from Bogor University, joined International Animal Rescue in 2010 and is responsible for all the education and awareness activities of IAR Indonesia. She furthermore runs the Indonesian webblog. Winar graduated with a masters thesis on slow loris conservation, and currently runs the Slow Loris Awareness Programme.
The office team in Ciapus further consists of Diah and Numan, who are the administration and IT staff respectively.
Rika, Yuli, and ibu Otih have responsibility for cleaning the office, guesthouse area and preparing food for the staff. Mulyana Ahun is the caretaker for domestic animals.
Acep is the driver and arranges all logistics.
Endang Ansori - Maintenance Coordinator
Endang joined us in 2007. His main tasks are to draft design ideas for the animal facilities and other facilities at IAR; to supervise and control the construction team setting up all our rehabilitation and release enclosures, to put a management system in place in his department; to make monthly reports about the condition of the enclosures and other facilities; and to make an inventory of electrical, mechanical and building goods needed for the office. He is assisted in his role by Endang Tirtana.
Darisman - Security Guard Coordinator
Darisman (Pak Aris) started working as security guard at International Animal Rescue in 2007, at the start of the project. He is the coordinator for the security team consisting of pak Sorabi, Jakaria, Darisman, Taufik, Engkus, Andika, and Dzikri.
